Compacted, clay-rich fill is generally recommended for grading next to a foundation, because it sheds water rather than absorbing it.
The fill is usually finished with a layer of topsoil, typically 10 to 15 centimetres deep, for grass or plants. Sand, gravel, or mulch should not be used as the main grading layer against the house, because they allow water to soak down toward the foundation.
